Political Career
As we look through the lattice of history, we realise that the greatest hindrance torecognizing the excellence of a genius comes from his contemporaries. Allama Iqbalwas one of those rare geniuses whose excellence in the field of poetry as well aspolitical thinking was recognized throughout the world in his own lifetime. He lived inthe period when millions of Indians - Muslims, Hindus and people of other religions -were fastened by the chains of British imperialism. During this dark period of slavery, disgrace and dishonor, Iqbal’s poetry imbibed a new spirit in the people and he himselfplayed a significant role in the struggle for independence of the subcontinent. Allama Muhammad Iqbal was one of the greatest thinkers and poets of the Muslimworld. He was not only a sage,a revolutionary poet-philosopher, an extraordinaryscholar and harbinger of Islamic renaissance but also a political thinker and seer ofPakistan. From the outset he took keen interest in the political situation of India and in1908 while he was still in England, he was selected as a member of the executivecouncil of the newly-established British branch of the Indian Muslim League. From the very beginning, Iqbal was pleading the concept of separate electorate for theMuslims. He considered it imperative for removing the sense of discrimination of theIndian Muslims and was not prepared to compromise on it at any stage.
